The High Noon Book Club enjoyed reading the book Going Down South. We also had a wonderful time discussing the bookHigh Noon Book Club

High Noon Book Club Members from left to right include: C. Carter, V. Abbott, I. Green, M. Perry (Librarian), L. Thompson (technician), F. Brown, and C. Dyson.

We discussed how there is a long standing history of blacks going down south to get away from life situations in the city. We all remembered going down south to spend time with our grandparents. We also, discussed how life was so much different in the south. The pace was slower so, you were more relaxed. We also remembered how you learned lessons that you may not have other wised learned if we had not visited the south (grandparents). This was the case with Daisy and Olivia Jean. Oh! Birdie too, even though she was from the south.

We discussion from page 89 Par. 3 about how Birdie hit the man at the produce stand for trying to charge her a higher amount for food because she was black. We all thought about how it reminded us of the Color Purple and Oprah's character Sophia when she hit the white man for calling her a nigger.

On page 181 we talked about how Daisy had the nerve to talk about Birdie and Shorty Long for lying to her about her birth father. She did the same thing to Olivia Jean because she knew that Turk was not her father before she married him.

We really enjoyed discussing Going Down South. We agreed to read "The Middle Sister" sometime in the future.
