RH Magazine - Bonnie Glover

by Bonnie J. Glover, author of Going Down South: A Novel

Since 2005 when my first book, The Middle Sister, was published, I’ve been asked to speak at various public schools, ranging from grade schools to colleges in Florida where I’m currently a resident. Each event has left me wanting to participate more in book discussions with young adults and I’m glad that now I’m receiving invitations to speak in schools as far away as Missouri.

When I speak to these school age kids we discuss our journeys through life and both of my novels, including my latest work, Going Down South. And, of course, there are always at least a few questions regarding my personal writing process and how to get published. When I speak to adults, they tend to ask about book deals and money. Kids are different. They ask about what’s fair game—is it all right to tell a story about something that really happened? And, young people often ask about inspiration. That’s a great subject. We also discuss reading and my personal belief that a person can never become a successful writer without being a successful reader first.

With the publication of Going Down South, I am finding more and more of my readership among the Young Adult (YA) population due to the novel’s focus on teenage pregnancy. The protagonist, Olivia Jean Stone, is fifteen years old and in “trouble,” —the dated euphemism for pregnancy in that era. Although the book is set on the cusp of 1959 and 1960, it strikes a chord with today’s teen audience and their educators. Suddenly, I’m in demand as a speaker and school personnel, and administrators contact me to come to them and talk to their students.

MeetupsHave you heard about Meetup.com and what they have to offer ? I've talked about networking groups in another blog, but this one is unique for a few reasons so I wanted to blog about it separately.

The land of Meetup.com can offer you specialty groups for anything you are into as well as groups to help you with your business.

I'm involved in several. Some are purely social lunches once a month (15 women in the back room of Mimi's restaurant) to networking lunches where we all go around the table and talk about our businesses as well as pass out business cards, to meeting at Chick-Fil-A where there is a playland for the kids so Mom's can get together to network. Whatever the venue it's a great way to connect with other like minded people.

If there is not a meetup in your area, you can start one! There is a small cost to being an organizer so feel free to charge what you need to cover the cost or the cost of a restaurant meeting room if necessary. For most members that works out to be $1 - $5.

Just keep in mind that if you want to meet with stay-at-home Mom's during the middle of the day, there needs to be a playland for kids. And in that case, it's best to only have 5-6 in attendance so everyone gets a chance to talk and share and get to know each other a little bit. These are not about large groups, but small groups that really get an opportunity to connect with each other.

Tony Johnson KOTC Heavyweight Champion

It may have come as a surprise to everybody outside the camp of Tony Johnson Jr., but here he was in the ring in only his 4th professional MMA battle fighting for the KOTC Heavyweight Championship.  The 2 belt holding (Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight) champion Tony Lopez needed a tomato can match to retain his belts, the call went out, they figured with such limited experience Tony Johnson would be over matched.  Battles and fights, Johnson has been in many, but being called a tomato can (rather than his long held nickname Hulk) was an insult to the beast in him.  KOTC wanted a fight; they got that and a NEW Heavyweight Champion.  Johnson was too much for Lopez to handle, as Johnson pounded and slammed Lopez for 5 rounds on his way to victory.

KOTC

Tony Lopez vs. Tony Johnson

Johnson Lopez KOTC

Round 1 – Johnson scores first with a jab.  Lopez with an inside leg kick.  Johnson comes back with a right hand, leg kick, right hand combo, then shoots and gets the take down.  Side mount for Johnson now.  Lopez rolls, and Johnson throws about 20 punches from the top, with only a few of them actually landing.  Lopez is staying composed as always.  Lopez grabs and arm, and works to his feet.  Johnson elevates Lopez and slams him to the mat.  Johnson is back on top with Lopez turtled up on his knees.  Lopez works his way back to his feet, and Johnson is landing knees to the thighs of Lopez.  Johnson goes for another slam, but this time Lopez remains on his feet.  Johnson changes levels and takes Lopez down again.  Lopez has an arm and Johnson may be in trouble.  Johnson picks Lopez up and slams him with his arm still stuck.  Lopez lets go of the armbar but is looking for the omaplata.  Lopez has the arm extended, but Johnson rolls out and is back on top, then side control.  Lopez retains half guard, but Johnson passes back to side control with :18 to go in the round.  Johnson is landing some right hands but Lopez is back up on his feet as the bell sounds on Round 1.  Pro MMA Now scores Round 1 for Tony Johnson, 10-9.

cc_logoI was talking to someone today and I mentioned a business I heard about awhile back during a  telesummit that I was listening to that I was fascinated with.  It’s called “Cubes and Crayons”.

It’s a daycare/office set up in Silicon Valley CA and I immediately jumped online to find out more. After I was reminded of this today,  I just  had to share it with you.

They offer a daycare option for children (infants – 5 years of age) in one area while the adults can work on laptops in another area that is set up like a professional office space. Parents can choose a full-time schedule, part-time schedule or just drop in care depending on their needs.

Here's what they have on their website:

ReferMyHomeBiz.com

ReferMyHomeBizWe appreciate that you are looking for helpful information to help your home based business grow. You'll find heaps of great content and information about running a home based business.

"Cubes" isolate.  The goal at Cubes&Crayons is to give you a great professional community while your child is playing in a safe environment.  Drop your laptop on a desk or lounge chair with tablet in our open work space and start work.  Wi-Fi included.  No hidden charges.  Mingle over coffee and cookies.  If you need your privacy, just head into an office or conference room.  Offices and conference rooms are available on a first come, first serve basis or by reservation for an additional fee.

I LOVE THIS IDEA!

I Need A Million Buck’s

Buck ONeil

In October of 2006 I lost two friends. One was a childhood friend, killed in a senseless murder in Miami, and the other a friend to many through his love of baseball. I met Buck O’Neil when I wore a younger man’s clothes. His love for people and baseball were priceless.

At the beginning of each baseball season the FAMU (Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, Tallahassee, Fla.) baseball team would play in the “Buck O’Neil Baseball Tournament” in Tuskegee, Alabama. You knew when he got to the ball park, the volume increased, and crowds started to form, then someone shouted he’s here, we all knew who they were talking about. Mr. O’Neil was a roving scout and ambassador of baseball for the Dodger organization at the time. Buck O’Neil made it part of his mission to say hello and shake the hand of every ballplayer. He urged us all to do our best no matter what the outcome of the game. He stayed from the first pitch to the last, talking baseball, telling stories of his travel and his love of baseball.
