What I See

This young sapling that stands next to me, taller than I; but I with more rings, more branches that stretch in various directions, what do I say to him? He stands with me in the same grove, I have seen more sunsets, and I have witnessed more changes in season. He can only be what his DNA is, how can I ask of him what I still struggle to be? How can he define his goals and ambitions, when I, more than twice his age, have not attained my own? What does he see? Is he looking towards me or is he looking to the horizon?Pines

What I See!!

I'm not quite old school, I'm not Hip Hop, but I am a part of rap. So he stands tall, wonder how and what his goals should be, should I emulate what I see on television? He comes from seeds, I'm not gangster, I'm not a thug, he can't change his DNA, and he can't change his skin color. How do I tell him that he will always be faced with the challenge, that his color defines people's perception of him without knowing him. That it's more than one battle, it is a lifelong war, to move to challenge, to conquer, but to conquer with love, and appreciation of those that went before you and those who are to follow...

No music playing in the background, but there is a beat, there is rhythm. I do I make it prophetic, do I use metaphors, because there is a vernacular of what he is accustomed to, what captures his attention. Do I quote the existentialism: of "I must find a truth that is true for me... the idea for which I can live or die" from philosophers like Kierkegaard and Nietzsche. What about Chomsky, Shakespeare, Biggie, Tupac. Do I want to be poetic, and at the same time prophetic? Am I trying to entertain him or share some wisdom?

What he sees is no different; it's just from younger eyes.

Hoodrat_radioIts summertime once again. Mercury is not the only thing rising. Its true that good work does not go unnoticed for long. A couple of contracts and moves happening, where do I start? School is still a major part of summer, though funds are scarce and tuition is increasing. How is it that there is little to no funding for schools while multimillion dollar contracts are still afforded? But that is another argument all together.Drake

Finding a way to shine is what summertime is about. You put in work and build networking relationships that hopefully lead to an opportunity to display your talent. When that time comes you must be ready to shine, since displaying that talent shows and proves you are capable. A lot of the time opportunities are not utilized as leverage to launch careers. Not looking at it so much as work but a future. You can get back more than what was invested by taking that extra step today not only to put you in a better position now but moving forward as well.

The expectation associated with a SUR-Name greatly influence ones outlook on life. People that I have known all of my life have similar names or their name can be closely associated with mine. I will either add or subtract from that surname in what I do.Obama_Kennedy

Family is something that cannot be stressed enough in a modern society. It is this that separates me from other people. At the root of many arguments today about what is wrong with society is family or the lack there of family structure. Family has always been there for me, when there was no one else to talk to or seek advice from. So I know of no other kind of interactions between the generations, the reassuring of who I am, who they are and what is to be expected as a member of my family; what I see, if very much focused not sole by my eyes, but made clear and descriptive by those that are active in my life. When I am making a decision on spending money, doing something illegal, and even when I am doing something rewarding; I think of how my decisions will be viewed by my family.

Valerie Maynard - AngelsValerie Maynard pools strength from spiritual and political sources. Metonymic impulses move her to recognize us as our first mothers and first fathers and incites her to combat injustice. Her art centers on the spiritual and rouses the political. This is the Church of the Picket Line. There is salvation in this signifying art of Maynard's, but deliverance sometimes comes with a price too dear for the faint of heart. To stand before Maynard's art is to be riveted before a mirror that will not lie. If you come to it with less than truth, your journey will be like an avalanche of rock and you will be torn limb from limb. But, there is a corresponding reward: the opportunity to remember yourself, and this time, you will not forget your heart, your soul or your mind. Witness the business of moving bodies to action by stirring intrinsic selves.

Barack Obama

The most important election probably in my lifetime is taking place next month and all eyes are on Barrack Obama. From the debates to press conferences the people are hanging on his every word and his promise of change with a "Yes We Can" attitude. The stereo types of the limitation of skin color over substances have to be reexamined. The rise of Barack is no accident, more of a coronation of the long journey of hope, ambition and hard work. There are many who did not live to see this day, and were not sure if it would ever come, but against the backdrop of not knowing when, they still gave their lives in the struggle so that the day could be possible.
